History -

Rundle Street, named in 1837 after Mr John Rundle, a director of the South Australia Company and member of the House of Commons, became an important trading street in the heart of Adelaide.
East-End-Rundle-Street.jpg
From the late nineteenth century until the late 1980s it was also home to the bustling and privately owned East End Markets, which went on to grow into the Adelaide Fruit and Produce Exchange, a self contained village existing for fruit and vegetable growers and traders in the produce game. A Mr William Charlick, grocer and produce merchant, was instrumental in the development of the markets, earning it a reputation for being the best presented of its kind in Australia.

In the midst of this colourful community of nearly 400 stalls and dozens of stores, existed almost 300 other trades including taxidermy, umbrella making, black smithing, midwifery and letter carrying!

Eventually the markets outgrew the available space in the area, moving to the northern suburb of Pooraka in 1988, allowing for the modern day culture of the East End to evolve during the 1990s and 2000s. A new blend of bohemian, artistic types, cafe culture, charming pubs and residential developments with a focus on fashion boutiques, was championed by property owners, Theo and Steve Maras of Maras Group. During this period the area changed dramatically, whilst still retaining the architectural character and lively ambience it had back in the produce market days.

Home to Adelaide’s Fringe Festival for the past 20 years, the East End is now the city’s premium destination for locals and visitors of all ages to revel in the city’s culture.
